How to Seduce a Bad Boy - Traci Douglass

Melody has always been in love with her brother's best friend.  When he finally comes home, she has the chance to set her plan in motion.  She is determined to have her chance with him.

Adam has seen too much to believe in happily ever after.  He also has a healthy fear of what his best friend will do to him if he touches his sister.  Denying his feelings for her at this point would be foolish, however.

Such a cute story with a lot of heat.  I found the couple just charming.  Reading about their story was easy.  Each page turned faster than I remembered and before I knew it - I was done.  I give this book a 4/5 Kitty's Paws UP!

Muffin Top - Avery Flynn

Lucy and Frankie have already met through mutual friends.  When he rescues her - literally from a jerk who has approached her.  Can Lucy control her urges when she finds herself attracted to the hunky firefighter?

Frankie has suddenly found himself in a position to get to know the elusive Lucy.  The more her learns, the hotter the attraction between them fizzles and pops until an explosion is inevitable.  Now to convince her what he feels for her is real.

This is a great installment to The Hartigans series.  I am finding that each book gets better and better.  The family is fun to read about.  Each character has their own quirks and personality.  It was truly a joy to read each page!  I cannot wait for the next book in this incredible series.  I give this  5/5 Kitty's Paws UP!

Waiting on the Sidelines (Waiting Series) (Volume 1) - Ginger Scott

Nolan meets Reed when he transfers in to her school.  He quickly becomes a sports legend.  She very soon has a serious crush.  Only she knows popular and herself do not meet.

Reed has an instant like with Nolan, and calls her a friend.  He is like any typical boy and wants to most out of high school.  This means both sports and girls.

Their story is definitely a qualifier for the slow burn.  There is immediate tension, and angst and so much more.  These characters are very compelling.  I enjoyed reading about their start to romance.  I give this a 4/5 Kitty's Paws UP!

Growing
Out in the Offense - Lane Hayes

This book is #3, in the Out In College series.  This book can be read as a standalone novel.  For reader understanding and to avoid spoilers, I recommend reading this series in order.

Christian has been keeping secrets.  When he meets his new tutor, and has a wild and almost uncontrollable reaction to him, it makes keeping secrets harder.  Can he grow and learn it is easier to just be honest?

Rory has been hurt before.  His wanting Christian does not change the status quo - nor the fact it is basically forbidden.  He cannot stop feelings once they start.

This was another great addition to the series.  These amazing characters have such depth and courage.  I loved devouring each page and could not wait to finish the story.  I give this book a 4/5 Kitty's Paws UP!

Excerpt

“What are your three most favorite things?” Morgyn asked as she strummed the guitar.

“That’s a hard one.”

“Okay, and the next two?” She bumped him with her shoulder, looking as sweet as she did sexy wearing one of his flannel shirts over her dress.

He loved her quirky sense of humor.

“Shouldn’t that be one of your favorite things?” he teased.

She shifted her gaze up toward the sky and strummed a faster tune, singing, “It’s your turn, not mine.”

“I’ve got a lot of favorite things.” He ran his fingers along her leg. “Your sexy legs.”

Her eyes darkened, and she played a little slower.

“And the way flecks of darker blue glitter in your eyes when you get turned on.”

“Cracker,” she said just above a whisper.

“I can’t help it that you’re beautiful.”

“Stop. You’re embarrassing me. Tell me something real.”

“That was real, and number three would be your free spirit.”

“Says Mr. Prepared, who brought a pop-up shower stall, a battery-operated heater, and a Coleman stove like my grandfather used. I’m willing to bet there’s a kitchen sink around here somewhere.”

“No sink, but I can rig one up if you need it.” He leaned in for a kiss, lingering because her kisses were unlike any others. She kissed with the same energy she seemed to do everything else, giving herself over to it completely, savoring every second.

Her eyes remained closed for a few heated seconds after their lips parted. When she opened them, a sated smile appeared like a gift. He wondered if she kissed other guys like that, or if she felt the same unfamiliar, unstoppable connection he did.

“I like kissing you, sunshine.” He brushed her hair behind her ear and kissed her again, slower and sweeter than the last. “I’m adding that to my list. I think I need more than three things.”

CHAPTER ONE

Dez

“Say it again,” Dez purred. She watched his lips as he uttered the words she so longed to hear.

“Hot, dark, Columbian, deep inside you.” His words came out in a sensual whisper causing her mouth to water with anticipation.

“Mmmm,” She closed her eyes and tipped her head back, imagining the level of satisfaction in her near future. “Let’s do it now,” she begged, “come on, it’s been almost four months. I swore I would never go this long without it again.” She leveled a deadly stare at him to make sure her urgency was understood. “I need this, Vegas. My body needs this.”

“You’re desperate, huh?” His reply was playful.

“You have no idea.”

“Alright, but we have to take care of business first.”

“I got this.” A wicked smile crept across her face.

Coffee will have to wait just a tiny bit longer.

Turning her attention back to the task at hand, she fired several shots in quick succession, taking out the three possessed men currently stalking toward them across the wide expanse of the run-down warehouse building. Once, the complex had been home to a series of crystal meth labs, and in a not-so-bright maneuver, a group of demons had set up shop inside a band of tweakers. The condition of their bodies showed the drugs had taken their toll long before the demons came along, their mobility limited to a slow limp. Dez had watched plenty of demons function absolutely fine in bodies with broken necks and signs of advanced decay. Meth, on the other hand, actually did enough damage to limit their motor skills.

“There are two more somewhere here,” she said as she stepped over one of the fallen bodies. She could feel the presence of the other two lurking in the shadows, but the demons weren’t making any moves toward them. They were in no danger. All it would take is one command and the demons would be forced to do as she wished, which included being able to bring them to a complete standstill. However, she and Vegas both enjoyed the hunt to a certain extent, so she didn’t often use that aspect of her demon powers.

They had bounced from one city to another since her little brush with death in the desert. Although spending lots of alone time with Vegas had been fun, she had reached her breaking point and ached for the extravagantly comfortable life she had built for herself in New York. The novelty of sleeping in shitty roadside motels had long worn away, even if she didn’t have to spend it alone anymore.

Her life had changed.

She had changed.

Everything she thought she knew about who she was and where she had come from had been nothing but a pack of lies specifically designed to bring her to that fateful moment in the desert.

After centuries of belief that she had perished at her own hand following Dez’s birth, Catalina, her biological mother, had turned up to complete the charge set forth by the Daughters of Eris. The long-hidden sect of the witch covens had taken it upon themselves to usher in the apocalypse by way of unleashing a demon hoard onto the human plane of existence, and then to play the hero of the day by wiping them all out in one fell swoop. Dez’s blood combined with a heavy dose of celestial magic was the key to the second part of their plan and had it not been for Vegas, they would have succeeded in their mission.

And she’d be dead.

After spending some much-needed downtime at Charlie’s house to recuperate, she and Vegas had both become rather antsy, desperate for some normalcy. The pair set out on the road, having already sent Kade back home, and had been hunting ever since. They had come to grips with the fact that hunting demons would have to be part of their daily lives, but it had become their entire life. This last stop━a shitty little New Hampshire town made most famous by its mass production of methamphetamine━had Dez craving the comforts of home and a cup of coffee from the best café the city that never sleeps had to offer.

“I won’t even make you go out and get it for me,” she informed him. “We can just stop on the way home. We’ll stock up on coffee and those little cranberry cake things.”

“Those are good,” he agreed.

“Yes, they really are. See? You’re getting excited. I knew it.”

“Dez,” he replied, “I never said I wasn’t excited about the prospect of going home, or that I can’t be swayed by promises of the smoothest coffee in existence. I’m excited.”

“You don’t sound excited.” Glass smashed in a room down the hall pulling their attention away from a conversation which was going nowhere fast. The small betrayal of their location was all Dez needed to finish the job. She swiftly moved toward a small row of rooms along the southern wall of the structure. The boarded-up windows enclosed what she assumed were small offices once upon a time. As she passed and cleared each one, she could see that as of late, the small rooms were being used as labs, each used to cook meth. All of the rooms contained glass bottles over burners, which were connected by clear, plastic tubing. She recognized the basic setup from news broadcasts about meth labs being raided by police in the city over the last few years. As she crept from room to room, she noticed that none of the labs were active. The overwhelming smell of rubbing alcohol slammed into her with every doorway she stepped to, each room taking her breath away and making her eyes water. She couldn’t imagine living with or anywhere near that odor. Not for the first time, she found herself questioning why anyone would choose this brand of drug production to make their money. The acrid odor aside, the chemicals required to cook meth are notoriously unstable, most meth lab raids either resulting in or a byproduct of the lab exploding.

As Dez neared the end of the row of offices, she pushed her senses out into the ether. She fully expected to find the hate-fueled presence of two demon minds just beyond one of the nearby doors. Instead, she found the same dull hum she had encountered previously. At close range, drug-addled or not, the demons’ psychic energy should have been unmistakable. She started to wonder if demons weren’t the only creatures she was going to bump into in the filthy warehouse building.

Dez signaled to Vegas, indicating she wanted him directly in front of the doorway when they opened the door. She would open the door from the side, and he would be there to cover her, just in case anything particularly nasty decided it was a good day to test its luck.

She reached for the door handle. Loud enough so she was sure the room’s inhabitants heard her, she yelled out.

“Don’t move!” Any demons inside would be forced to follow her command. Anyone else would probably just assume she was a cop. She turned the knob of the door as silently as she could and pushed it. The door hinges creaked as it swung into the office.

“It’s clear,” Vegas said.

“Definitely not empty, though,” Dez replied tapping her index finger to her temple reminding him that she had felt the presence of two minds in the room. She brought her gun up in front of her and crept into the room. She quickly spun around making sure there was nothing hiding behind the door. With the exception of the large wooden desk serving as a table for the cook operation, the room was empty. She was about to close her eyes and reach out into the ether again when a tiny movement pulled her attention downward. The small gap at the bottom edge of the desk revealed a delicate human foot, and whoever it was attached to was trying their best to pull it back in hopes of not being seen. Dez pointed her gun at the wooden panel covering the front of the desk.

“Since the particular people I’m looking for wouldn’t be able to move right now, I’m guessing you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time.” Dez tried to keep her voice calm and pleasant, which sounded completely at odds with the words coming out of her mouth. “I have a loaded sidearm pointed directly at where I assume your head would be, and if I think for one second you’re about to do anything stupid, I’ll pull the trigger. Come on out of there, nice and slow.”

There was a rustling noise under the table and a small hand gripped the edge. The dirt-caked fingernails were chewed to the quick. The delicate pixie face peering back at her, framed by disheveled brown and honey-blonde streaked hair, was not what Dez had expected. The girl’s eyes were bright blue, not that different from her own, and clear of any demons, supernatural or otherwise. Aside from her clothes being covered in dust, she was clean. Whoever she was, she didn’t appear to be the type to frequent a meth lab. Not anymore, at least. The girl’s slender arms hung at her sides, tiny pale scars the only remaining evidence of long-since healed track marks betraying her past addiction.

“Heroin?” Dez asked. The girl self-consciously grabbed her arm, covering the scars, and nodded her head slightly, never taking her frightened eyes off of Dez’s gun.

“But you’re clean, right?” The girl nodded again, a nervous twitch to her movements. “Then what are you doing here?” The girl opened her mouth to speak, but before she could get a word out, Vegas interrupted her.

“You’re not alone.” The girl turned her attention to him, her eyes widened with alarm and recognition, and she nervously shook her head. She hesitantly glanced down and waved her hand to someone unseen. More rustling and another set of tiny hands led the arrival of another girl. The new girl’s hair was dyed black, her lighter brown roots grown out far enough for Dez to know it’d been a long time since she’d seen the inside of a salon. She was in far worse shape, her gaunt appearance assuring she wouldn’t be a poster child for walking the rocky road to sobriety any time soon. Her hands twitched and she started lightly scratching her neck, probably without even thinking about it. She was younger than the first girl, but not by much if Dez had to guess. She lowered her gun and nodded to Vegas for him to do the same. Both girls relaxed but only slightly.

“How long have you been clean?” She posed the question to the older girl, knowing the question was wasted on the younger one.

“I just got my one-year chip,” the girl replied, referring to a milestone for many in addiction recovery programs.

“What are you doing here? A meth lab isn’t exactly a good place for a recovering addict to be spending their time.”

“This is my little sister’s best friend. I came here looking for her. I knew this is where she comes to buy. When no one had seen her in a few days, I figured this is where she had ended up. We’ve been stuck here since yesterday morning.” She paused for a moment, then her tone completely changed, as if she were just waking up. “Were they zombies? I didn’t believe zombies were really possible, but those were zombies, right? Those things definitely looked like zombies. We hid in here when we saw them. Her mom would kill me if I got her turned into a zombie. Did you know zombies were a thing?” Her words came out in a rush, the tangle of thoughts spilling out of her.

“They’re gone,” Vegas answered.

“But that’s what they were, right? Zombies?”

“Not exactly,” Dez replied, “but arguably similar. How many of them did you see when you came in here?”

“Three, I think.” Dez turned toward Vegas and flipped the switch. She let her demon senses take over. She felt once more for any other presences in the building. She blinked her eyes, returning them to their normal icy blue, and an excited smile spread across her face.

“That’s all of them. You know what that means.”

“Time to go home,” Vegas responded, his own smile matching hers. Dez turned back to the girls.

“So, what’s the plan here? Are you taking her back to her parents?”

“Yes but I know someone who might be able to secure her a bed at a good rehab center up north. They helped me sober up and my counselor there might be able to help her. I’ll get her home and make some phone calls.” Dez pulled her cell phone out of her pocket, opened her address book, and selected the icon to add a new record.

“What are your names?”

“Tessa,” the older girl replied, her voice shaking, “and this is Kaitlyn.”

“Nice to meet you both. I’m Dez and this is Michael. Tessa, what’s your phone number?” Dez typed in the digits as the girl read them off and clicked the save button before tucking her phone back in her pocket. “I’m going to check in with you soon, just to make sure you’re okay. If you ever need anything, anything at all, look me up at Onyx in New York City. Can you remember that? Onyx?”

“Yes, Onyx. Got it.” Her reply was polite, but the look in her eyes said she wasn’t quite sure what to make of it.

“I’ll help you out in any way I can, you just have to promise to keep that shit out of your veins. It kills people. There are much better things you can be doing with your time than pumping your body full of that shit. If you find yourself in a rut, I can give you work. There is no situation you don’t have a way out of. Consider me your get-out-of-jail-free card. Use it if you need it. Are you okay to get home or do you need a ride?”

“Um, no, we’re okay. I can get us home, I mean. Can I, um, ask a question?”

“Of course.” The girl turned her attention toward Vegas before continuing.

“Are you a vampire?” She stumbled a bit on the last word.

“I am,” he answered, no point in attempting to hide his true nature. His golden eyes instantly gave him away, but the girl had to ask.

“He’s not what you pictured?” Des asked.

“I don’t know. I thought you’d be paler or something.” She stared at Vegas for a moment before speaking again. “And, if they weren’t zombies, what were those guys?”

Dez looked to Vegas for guidance. Without any words necessary, his eyes conveyed his feelings. He felt the same way she did. How much she knew was up to Tessa at this point. The girl had seen and been through enough. If it earned her anything, it was the truth.

“How much do you want to know?”

“Just the basics, I guess.”

“They were demons. Well, people possessed by demons.” The girl stared in thought for a moment before responding.

“Demons?” Dez nodded, surprised by the girl’s lack of panic. “Wow. Bummer. Alright, well, we’re going to go home now. I’m starving and I’ve had enough weird for one day.” She quickly looked to Vegas. “No offense.”

“None taken.”

“Before you leave, what’s the name of my bar?”

“Onyx, and it’s in New York.”

“Good. Okay, be safe.” Tessa took Kaitlyn by the arm and guided her out from behind the desk. The pair hurried out the door toward the exit of the building. Dez watched them go as she and Vegas strolled toward the same exit. She couldn’t imagine losing herself to an addiction, but over the centuries, she’d watched it happen to countless numbers. She watched it ruin lives and tear families apart. But there was something in Tessa’s eyes, a spark she didn’t want to see extinguished like so many before her. Tessa had hope. She’d recovered from an addiction that could have taken her life at any time, and now her path could lead anywhere.

“Are we taking in strays now?” Vegas cocked his eyebrow at her as he wrapped an arm around her shoulder.

“No strays, smartass.”

“I know, I’m just playing with you. I think what you offered is sweet. I just don’t know where it came from. You don’t like people.”

“I don’t know. There is just something about her. Call it a gut feeling.”

“Good enough,” he replied, pulling her closer briefly to place a light kiss on her forehead.

“So, dark roast?”

“For starters, I am thinking a perfect cup of medium roast. Then, maybe a mocha latte or a classic cappuccino.”

“You’re going to be bouncing off the walls of the penthouse,” he said as they strolled toward the exit.

“I can think of a few ways to burn off the extra energy.”

The Hail Mary by Ginger Scott
Adult Contemporary Romance
Release day: January 18, 2019

Blurb:

The Hail Mary
Waiting Series Book 3
Adult Contemporary Romance, Coming of Age Trilogy

Sixteen years is a long time. In a marriage, it’s a milestone. On the gridiron, it’s a miracle. Reed Johnson wants more time for everything, but time is funny that way.

It can be cruel.

With a body that can’t quite take the hits it used to and a heart tired of being torn in two different directions, Reed is faced with a reality he’s not quite ready for—life without the game. He became a man under Friday night game lights and in college stadium tunnels, and without the grit and the glory that’s earned ten yards at a time, he’s afraid of what kind of man he’ll be.

But there’s more than a game at stake now.

Reed’s wife, Nolan, is afraid too. She’s seen what can happen when the love of her life pushes himself too hard, and she can’t escape the nightmares she relives after almost losing her entire world to one single play on the field.

There is no compromise when it comes to football. Same goes for the heart. You’re either all in, or you get crushed. For Reed and Nolan, the clock is ticking down. Time…it does that. One way or another, they’re going to have to make a choice.

This is their hail Mary.

This is win or lose.

(The Hail Mary is book 3 in The Waiting Series, which follows high school sweethearts Reed Johnson and Nolan Lennox through football, life, love and everything messy that goes along with it. The series begins with Waiting on the Sidelines and Going Long.)

Excerpt:

Behind us, my brother’s voice bellows over some touchdown I’m sure he’ll tell me about the minute I step inside. For as much as I love this game and it gives me life, I really hate talking about it like a fan. It’s like seeing behind the scenes at Disneyland—magic gets lost.

I know Nolan won’t want to talk about the Sunday games.

“You wanna go for a walk?” I say without giving my brain a chance to stop my mouth from asking.

Nolan laughs at first, but when she sees I’m serious, she glances over her shoulder then looks back to me.

“Alright,” she smirks.

I nod toward the driveway, and we both step at the same time. As much as the area has grown, our family’s place is still set off from most of the rest of town. That won’t be the case when we sell off the back acreage, but it’s the right developer and the right time. Still—I’m going to miss the lonely feeling of our main road one day. Lonely isn’t always a bad thing. Sometimes, it clears your head.

“Please say this wasn’t the tattoo boy that made her go to the desert party,” I say, feeling my fist tighten in my pocket just at the mention of him.

Nolan laughs lightly.

“No, Reed. You’ll be glad to know that this boy is a quarterback,” she says.

“Ah hell.” I roll my eyes and look up at karma.

“Yep. He’s fifteen. Sophomore.”

I want to finish her sentence with “and he’s dead,” but that’s just my daddy blood boiling.

“She’s a freshman. And she’s not allowed to date,” I say instead, knowing that’s not true and won’t be enforced. Nolan lets my rant go without acknowledgement, so we walk a little longer in silence, our legs turning on instinct to head into town.

“Is he good at least?” I grumble my question, and when she doesn’t answer me right away, I glance to my right to catch her grin.

“What?”

“Nothing,” she says, teasingly. “It’s just…he might have broken your freshman record for passing yards. And he maybe wears your number. And his name might be Ryan.”

I stop walking and she takes a few more steps away from me before turning and walking backward to face me.

“I’m kidding…” She points at me and laughs. All I can do is shake my head. My relief is short, though, because she’s only kidding about that last part.

“His name’s Bryce. He’s a nice kid. Just a little…misguided.” Her eyes dance on mine with that word, the same one her mom used to say about me when we were in high school.

“I’m going to hate him,” I say, catching back up to her stride.

“Nah…” she says.

“I disagree.” I’m firm about it. I don’t care if the kid ends up winning state. I won’t like him. Wait…

“How’d they do at state last year?” I ask.

She doesn’t say it out loud. It’s in the expression she wears, mouth higher on one side and eyes lifted. My daughter is dating a mini me. Damnit all to hell.

The sun is getting higher, and I know Nolan’s starting to feel the heat on our walk, so I offer to turn around, but she insists we keep going. I don’t fight her on it because these roads have a healing power to them. It’s why Nolan wouldn’t let my dad sell everything and move into a care place, why she moved in and why her and I both agreed this was where we wanted Peyton to go to high school. We can afford for my dad to be anywhere, which means we can also afford to bring therapists and doctors to us. This little piece of our history is too important.

The press box comes into view and the scent of barbecue hits my nose at the same time, making me salivate.

“Fundraiser?” I ask.

“It’s homecoming week.” Noles flits her gaze to me for a few seconds, and a thousand memories flood in. I’d give anything to get a redo on some of our school dances. On homecoming, especially.

That’s why she was alright with the heat. She knew this destination would scratch at my soul. It does the job.

“Come here,” I say, slowing down my walk as she gets a few paces ahead. She turns to face me and I reach out my hand.

Bashful eyes haven’t aged a day, I swear to God. Her mouth curves in suspicion—as it should. I curl my fingers, gesturing for her to take my hand, and my head tilts to the side.

“Come on, I won’t bite,” I say, and her head turns a fraction to the right as her eyes dim.

We stay in this standoff for a few seconds, eyes locked and every chase in our past flowing through our minds. I don’t mask it well, and when I reach for her she squeals and takes off in a sprint toward the field.

“You know I’m going to catch you!” I call after her as she rounds the fence and swings the gate closed behind her in an effort to slow me down.

I grab the top and swing my legs over in a jump, a little impressed with myself when I don’t biff the landing or get hurt. Noles glances over her shoulder, her long hair a twisted mess that covers most of her eyes, but she still sees me. Her laughter gets wild, this giggle that’s so damned reminiscent of the school girl I fell for two decades ago.

We make it to the track and she slows up, giving in for my arms to lift her up over my shoulder and walk her the rest of the way into the end zone. I spin her a few times until I’m dizzy and then I let her body slide back down to the damp grass, my arms still around her.

This feels good.

It won’t last.

Opposites attract…and ignite.

On the ice, Justin Perry is always in control. As one of the Reading Redtails’ best defensemen, he plays with an intense focus and skates like he was born on blades. Off the ice, he’s content to keep his head down and his eyes on the prize: a spot on an NHL team. Except when Vivi Martin’s around. She’s bright, bold and beautiful and Justin can’t make himself look away.

Vivi can’t help but notice Justin’s interest and, yeah, she’s not immune to his awkward charm or his grin that steals her breath. But falling for another athlete who will only leave and break her heart is the last thing she needs. Been there, done that. No t-shirt required. She’s too busy working three part-time jobs to make ends meet while figuring out how to use her passion for photography to build a career.

Until Vivi gets a peek at what’s underneath Justin’s boy-scout exterior and discovers a tattooed hunk who rocks her world with a kiss. She’d be a fool to pass up a chance to get him in her bed....and in front of her camera. And Vivi’s no fool.

But when a career-focused hockey player pursues a free spirit who’s built a fortress of ice around her bruised heart, Justin’s going to have to step up and take his best shot to break through Vivi’s walls...and hope it doesn’t shatter them both.

CONNECT WITH THE AUTHORS NYT & USA Today bestselling author M. Malone lives in the Washington, DC metro area with her husband and their two sons. She holds a master’s degree in Business from a prestigious college that would no doubt be scandalized by how she’s using her expensive education.

Independently published, she has sold more than 1/2 million ebooks in her two series, THE ALEXANDERS and BLUE-COLLAR BILLIONAIRES. Since starting her indie journey in 2011 with the runaway bestselling novella “Teasing Trent,” her work has appeared on the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists more than a dozen times. USA Today bestselling author Nana Malone‘s love of all things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense novel she “borrowed” from her cousin. It was a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana, and Nana was a precocious thirteen. She’s been in love with kick-butt heroines ever since.

With her overactive imagination constantly channeling her inner Buffy, it was only a matter a time before she started creating her own characters. While she waits for her chance at a job as a ninja assassin, Nana works out her drama, passion and sass with fictional characters every bit as brazen and kick-butt as she thinks she is.

Excerpt:

“What the hell was that?” I yelped.

“My fucking car!” Greg boomed.

Yeah, maybe he should start using old bangers for patrols.

A deep keening came from the dark road, my sparks spitting in reaction to the horrible, mournful sound. Through the messed-up windscreen, I could see something pale moving in the dark.

I opened my door, my friends doing the same.

“Okay,” Nay drawled. “This is a new one.”

The first thing I noticed about the white creature was the pear shape of its body—small head and upper region, a swollen lower region. Its arms were tiny, like a T-Rex, and the paleness of its skin was as white as freshly fallen snow.

The creature howled in despair.

The second thing I noticed, which I couldn’t quite believe, were the coal eyes, the carrot nose, and the black blobs down its front in a straight line that looked like buttons.

“I’m asleep, right?” I said.

“That can’t be a carrot,” Greg added.

What differentiated this beast from being a cute snowman on the front lawn was the wide mouth that almost split its small head in half. There were no lips, just lines of black and rows of black shards ready to rip flesh from bone.

And it had legs—two kangaroo-looking pins.

I sighed. “I’m so not in the bloody mood for this.”

Nay had her phone up, quickly scanning the beast into the app she’d created regarding beast knowledge.

The beast whined, taking some steps back.

I approached.

“Careful,” Greg said, jutting a muscular arm out to halt me. “Don’t ever get sucked into the scaredy-cat crap, mate.”

There were no amber ribbons of light to see around the snowman—an indication of beast fear to my eyes.

Another howl of sorrow.

“That’s not snow,” Dean said. “Can you smell that?”

“What?” I wondered.

“Lilies.”

I sniffed deep. There, on the cold air, I could smell the sweet scent of funeral homes. “I hate lilies.”

“Me too.”

The snowman howled once more and pounced. Bloody hell! It went high on those bouncy legs. It came crashing down on the Mercedes, caving in the roof.

Greg roared and threw himself at the snowman. His fist met solidity, the side of the beast cracking ever so slightly under the power of his punch. With swiftness I wasn’t expecting, the beast kicked Greg in the chest and sent him sprawling on the asphalt.

It leapt into the air, aiming its body right for me. Crap. I rolled in time to avoid the crushing of my bones.

Nay threw a potion vial. It exploded into a green fire, spiraling around the freaky creature, but failing to do anything. The snowman jumped into a dropkick. Nay was quick to avoid a hit … just.

Greg was fuming, thankfully unhurt for now. He’d feel it when the rage cooled down.

“Get on Dean’s shoulders!” Nay called.

“What?”

Dean’s head was between my legs, and I was lifted into the air. He held me by the thighs, and my dick throbbed inappropriately at the firmness of his grip.

The snowman was bouncing after Greg, who was calling it every name under the sun as he swung punches and avoided getting kicked again.

Nay ran to me and Dean. “Ready?”

I swallowed. “For what?”

“Dean’s gonna throw you.”

“I am?” Dean said.

“I thought we were on the same page seeing you’re between his legs.”

I blushed.

“Didn’t want to debate it,” Dean replied. “I just did it.”

God! Could he feel my boner on the back of his head? I wanted to get down.

You mean go down!

Stupid inner voice! This was not the time for this bollocks.

“Throw him, and I’ll aim him for the head,” Nay said.

“Oh, my God!”

Dean squeezed my thighs a little tighter.

“I’ve got a spell that should work.”

Greg got in a nice smack to the beast’s solid belly, a fracture line appearing across the white. The snowman howled and bounced away some feet, hopping from foot to foot once it was back on the ground.

“Should?” Dean said.

“We have one shot at this,” Nay answered. “While Greg’s pissing it off.”

Oh, shit.

“You ready, Jake?” Dean asked.

No. “Y-yes.”

“Get those hands ready,” Nay said. “You’re gonna have to work fast.”

“If I miss?”

“Don’t.”

Dean straightened and started to walk toward the beast.

“You fuck with my car, I fuck you up!” Greg roared. “Come on! Let’s be having ya!”

“In three,” Nay said, “charge and throw.”

Bloody hell! My lips were dry, my stomach doing loops. I could barely hear her counting or feel the speed of Dean’s charge.

Before I could blink, I was flying through the air at the snowman beast made of marble, magic tickling at my belly from Nay’s spell. If I missed, I’d smash my teeth out, break my nose and basically be a mess on the floor and then be kicked away or stomped on, a mushy mess of—

My hands were on the snowman’s head. Another part of me, the non-neurotic quarter—a.k.a. wannabe bad-arse—had taken over.

The terrible keening rang in my ears before the silence engulfed me in the place of beast essence.

Killing touch delivered, I enjoyed the sensation of feeding and did my best to hide the raging boner in my jeans. What with Dean having been in close proximity, and the fact that killing beasts made me inexplicably horny, it was straining to escape the confines of denim.

You can stay where you bloody well are! I told it.

Once my composure was restored to a degree of normality, I took in the scene. Greg’s car was completely written off. No way were we going home in the comfy, new Mercedes.

Greg was raging. He ripped off a wing mirror and smashed it on the road, proceeding to do the same to the other one.

“Thanks, Karla,” Nay said into her phone and hung up. “Mr. Douglas is coming to pick us up.”

“Motherfuckingbullshithellbollocks!” Greg boomed.

“Nice work, you two,” Nay said.

I didn’t realize Dean was standing next to me. I turned to look at him to find he was staring right at me.

I offered him a smile, and he averted his gaze.

My shoulders sagged. A good old curl-up under the duvet, with the world being shut away, was just what I needed.

And a cold shower.

Something About Jace - Jocelynn Drake, Rinda Elliott

Jace meets Trent when his dog introduces them.  He knows there is no future with a hot actor who has no intention of sticking around.  Maybe he just deserves to have a fling with someone that stimulates his senses?

Trent has no idea when he goes on vacation that he could meet THE one.  Now he just wants to take all of his time and spend as much as he can together.  What will happen when the time is up?

This is a classic slow burn.  You just do not see it coming.  This is a great love story from start to finish.  I sure hope to see more of these amazing characters.  This series is just beginning.  I cannot wait for the next installment.  I give this book a 4/5 Kitty's Paws UP!
